About the event

The aim of this workshop is to introduce students on how to conceptualize studies on the psychology of learning and teaching using secondary data from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). The first part of the workshop will involve teaching students how to analyze the PISA dataset. Using the principle of learning by doing, the authors will present two studies they have conducted using secondary PISA data. The first study focuses on testing the cross-cultural universality of self-determination theory, one of the most prominent motivational frameworks that researchers use to understand motivation and learning. The second study focuses on understanding the factors that underpin gender differences in reading achievement. The second part of the workshop will involve a collaborative learning activity wherein students will be asked to brainstorm potential research questions using the PISA dataset.
